As far back as I can remember, I’ve been familiar with the practice of churches hosting blood drives. I’ve seen them, and once or twice even overcome my fear of needles to give blood.
But the longer I serve in the mission of helping Christians share their story, I increasingly wonder, why aren’t there ever any story drives at churches?
That sparks all kinds of questions….
what’s the purpose of a blood drive?
who benefits when someone gives blood?
why do people give blood (there are many reasons)?
why don’t more people give blood? (it’s been reported that less than 5% of eligible blood donors give blood)
why does a partnering organization come setup at a church to harvest blood?
why doesn’t the church just harvest people’s blood themselves?
why does a church agree to have a partner organization come setup?
why don’t all churches have a blood drive?
how do blood drives work? what is required to make them successful?
If you take the time to ask some of these questions, and then replace the word blood with stories, in light of Scripture and eternity, you may begin to see your church, your people, and their stories through a new lens.
How could we help advance the mission of the Church if churches were to be as intentional about having story drives as they did blood drives? Who are the partnering organizations working with these churches to harvest and distribute stories, and how can we help them succeed?
